There are journeys that remain memorable because they take us to new places, and there are others that leave a far deeper impact because they transform the way we think, broaden our professional perspectives, and enrich us both intellectually and personally. My journey to the People’s Republic of China was undoubtedly one of those exceptional experiences. It combined scientific learning, cultural exchange, and international collaboration, offering me the invaluable opportunity to explore the philosophy and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) while experiencing firsthand one of the world’s oldest and most remarkable civilizations.
From 22 June to 14 July 2026, I had the honor of participating in the Training Program on Nursing Techniques with Traditional Chinese Medicine Characteristics, held in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, alongside healthcare professionals from numerous countries around the world. From the very beginning, it became clear that this program was far more than a conventional training course. It was a comprehensive educational experience that successfully integrated academic instruction, practical clinical training, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.
The academic program introduced us to the fundamental principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including the philosophy of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements Theory, and the traditional understanding of the body’s organ systems. We explored how these principles guide disease prevention, diagnosis, and patient-centered care, emphasizing a holistic approach that considers both physical and emotional well-being.
The lectures covered a broad range of clinical topics, including insomnia, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory diseases, breast diseases, and the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. We also gained valuable knowledge about Chinese medicinal herbs, their preparation, preservation, and their safe integration into healthcare practice.
One of the most valuable aspects of the program was its practical component. We received hands-on training in several of the most recognized Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques, including acupuncture, cupping therapy, Gua Sha, and moxibustion. Beyond learning the technical skills, we studied their therapeutic indications, contraindications, and their role in improving patient outcomes within an integrated healthcare system.
Another important dimension of the program focused on China’s approach to nursing quality management and patient safety, as well as the successful integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern medical practice. This model demonstrates how centuries-old medical knowledge can be preserved while embracing continuous scientific and technological advancement.
Among the highlights of the program was our educational visit to Shanxi Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where we observed firsthand how traditional and modern medicine are integrated within a contemporary hospital environment. We visited departments specializing in rehabilitation, respiratory medicine, endoscopy, and various therapeutic services, while also learning about hospital quality management systems and multidisciplinary patient care. This experience provided an invaluable opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with real clinical practice.
The program also offered a rich cultural experience that extended well beyond the classroom. In Taiyuan, we explored the city’s historic old town, traditional markets, and cultural landmarks, including the Shanxi Museum, Jinci Temple, the Mengshan Giant Buddha, and the Taiyuan Botanical Garden. These visits reflected China’s remarkable commitment to preserving its history, cultural heritage, and natural environment.
Our journey also included a visit to Beijing, where we had the privilege of visiting the Great Wall of China, one of humanity’s greatest engineering achievements. We also witnessed the country’s impressive urban development and modern infrastructure, reflecting China’s extraordinary progress across multiple sectors.
One of the most meaningful moments of the entire experience was delivering a presentation about Palestine to fellow participants representing countries from across the globe. I introduced my homeland by highlighting its history, geographical significance, cultural heritage, and the resilience of its healthcare sector and medical institutions.
Part of my presentation focused on Palestinian traditional medicine, discussing the historical use of medicinal plants and natural herbs in healthcare. I also highlighted the similarities between Palestinian folk medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, as both traditions emphasize the healing power of nature, disease prevention, and maintaining harmony between the body and mind. I was deeply encouraged by the genuine interest shown by participants in learning more about Palestine, its people, and its rich cultural heritage. Representing my country on such an international platform was a source of immense pride and honor.
On a personal level, this experience provided an exceptional opportunity to establish meaningful friendships and professional relationships with healthcare professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds. The exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences created an environment of mutual respect and understanding that was every bit as valuable as the academic content of the program itself.
Today, I return to Palestine carrying with me new knowledge, valuable practical experience, and an even stronger belief in the importance of lifelong learning and international collaboration. I look forward to sharing the knowledge and skills I have acquired with my colleagues and integrating these experiences into my professional practice, contributing to the development of healthcare services while promoting greater awareness of Traditional and Complementary Medicine.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for this remarkable opportunity. I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Palestine and the Bethlehem Governorate for their continuous support and commitment to strengthening scientific and cultural exchange. My sincere thanks also go to the organizing institutions, distinguished lecturers, trainers, and all members of the organizing team for their outstanding professionalism, generous hospitality, and unwavering academic support throughout the program.
This journey will remain a defining milestone in both my professional and personal life—not only because of the knowledge and experience I gained, but because it reaffirmed my belief that science is a universal language and that the exchange of knowledge and culture remains one of the strongest bridges connecting nations, fostering cooperation, mutual understanding, peace, and sustainable development.
