When the Nursing Profession Meets the Civilization of Science: Lessons from the Chinese Experience

Some experiences remain engraved in one’s memory forever. I never expected that just three weeks of training would be enough to reshape many of my professional convictions. My participation in the specialized Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Nursing Training Program, held in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, People’s Republic of China, from June 22 to July 14, 2026, reaffirmed my belief that advancing nursing practice begins with lifelong learning and openness to the experiences of others.
The program offered a comprehensive educational model that combined academic knowledge, hands-on clinical practice, and direct exposure to advanced healthcare systems. Through a series of scientific lectures and field visits to specialized healthcare institutions, participants gained a deeper understanding of the philosophical and scientific foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including the concepts of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements Theory. The program also introduced a variety of well-established therapeutic approaches such as acupuncture, cupping therapy, moxibustion, Gua Sha therapy, and the use of Chinese herbal medicine, while demonstrating how these practices are effectively integrated into modern healthcare systems.
One of the highlights of the program was the series of field visits to specialized medical institutions, particularly Shanxi Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where participants observed a successful model for integrating traditional and modern medicine. These visits reflected a high standard of professional organization, quality management, patient safety, and multidisciplinary teamwork. They demonstrated that excellence in healthcare depends not only on advanced technology but also on well-trained professionals, continuous education, and a culture of ongoing quality improvement.
The experience extended well beyond academic learning. It also provided an opportunity to discover the richness of Chinese civilization and its cultural heritage. The program included visits to several historical and cultural landmarks in Taiyuan and Beijing, most notably the Great Wall of China, one of the world’s greatest historical monuments. These visits highlighted China’s remarkable ability to preserve its ancient heritage while achieving outstanding progress in science, technology, and economic development.
On a personal level, this program represented my first international training experience, making it especially meaningful. It provided a valuable opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals from different countries, exchange knowledge and experiences, and gain new perspectives on shared global health challenges. These interactions reinforced the importance of international collaboration in improving nursing practice and enhancing the quality of patient care across diverse healthcare systems.
Among the moments I value most was delivering a presentation about Palestine to the international participants. I introduced the country’s history, cultural heritage, and healthcare system, while highlighting similarities between certain traditional Palestinian healing practices and the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This presentation served as a meaningful opportunity to promote Palestine and strengthen its presence within this international academic forum.
International experiences extend far beyond the transfer of knowledge. They build bridges between nations, foster mutual understanding, and encourage professional cooperation and the exchange of expertise. I returned to Palestine carrying not only new knowledge but also a broader vision of the nursing profession and a stronger belief in the importance of lifelong learning and embracing international experiences to improve healthcare services and enhance patients’ quality of life.
In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the State of Palestine, the Public Relations and Media Unit of Bethlehem Governorate, as well as the organizing institutions and distinguished lecturers whose dedication made this exceptional training program possible. This experience was far more than a training course—it was a journey of knowledge, culture, and humanitarian values. It strengthened my conviction that the greatest investment is in people and that the true value of knowledge lies in transforming it into better service for society.
For me, China became far more than a training destination. It was an inspiring experience that demonstrated how the future of healthcare depends on openness to diverse medical traditions, learning from successful international models, and working together to build healthcare systems that are more efficient, innovative, and compassionate.
